Introduction

Ralph is the main character of Lord of the Flies. Golding has used Ralph to portray admirable qualities, so it is easy for the reader to like him and relate to him.

  • Ralph represents the theme of civilisation

Ralph represents law and order. He takes charge of the littleuns and gives them jobs to make the island a better place. He clings to the hope of rescue and returning to civilisation. Ralph is built like a 'boxer'. This means that he is powerful and introduces him with power. There is a 'mildness about his mouth' that also suggests he is kind and good natured, which are all good qualities for a great leader. 

Determined: 'Im chief. I'll go, Dont argue'

Brave: 'Ralph picked up his stick and prepared for battle'

Fair: 'The choir belongs to you of course'

Honest: 'We'd talk but we wouldnt fight a tiger. We'd hide'

  • Ralph is a flawed character, which makes him more likeable to the audience

He sometimes gives into his instincts, he gnaws at his meat 'like a wolf' and gets excited when he wounds a pig. He takes part in Simon's murder and feels very guilty about it, 'That was murder'

As the book progresses, he finds himself in a 'maze of thoughts' and frequently describes a 'curtain' over his brain, showig he cant…
