• The study was conducted in a nursing home in Connecticut, USA, that was rated as one of the finest.
• There were 4 floors in the home, of which 2 were selected for this study because the residents on each of these floors were similar in terms of physical and psychological health; they had been at the home for similar lengths of time and were of similar socioeconomic backgrounds.
