Langer and Rodin's research supports and develops earlier claims by those such as Bengston, who said that the feelings of uselessness and loss of purpose due to the changes in the aging process could indeed be counteracted. This is because Langer and Rodin clearly demonstrated a difference between their two experimental groups, as 93% of those in the responsibility induced group showed an improvement during the three week experimental period. They reported themselves to be happier, more active and to have a higher level of interaction and mental alertness, compared to the control group. Therefore Bengston's claims are clearly supported by Langer and Rodin's findings, as they discovered a greater sense of responsibility does lead to happiness.
