psychology lesson 1

Id, ego, superego:

  • freud concluded that the majority of the mind is unconscious
  • he divided the mind into three components: id, superego, ego
  • the id is entirely conscious
  • the superego and ego are partly conscious

The Id:

  • represents our instinctual, biological urges
  • split into two components:
  • eros- sexual instincts
  • thanatos- death instincts
  • it exists completely from birth
  • encourgages us to be impulsive, take and do what we want
  • if this id was followed completely our behaviour would be impulsive and chaotic
  • the ego makes sure this doesn't happen

The superego;

  • can influence our conscious thought
  • not fully formed at birth
  • represents the moral principles that are learned during childhood
  • developed through interaction with family
