psychology 2nd lesson:

  • coding: the format which information is stored in
  • capacity: the amount that memory can hold
  • duration: the length of time information is held in memory

RESEARCH INTO CODING:

  • carried out by Alan Baddeley
  • words that were accoustically similar were harderr to recall from STM (sound similar)
  • words that were semantically similar were harder to recall from LTM (mean similar)

Conclusion: information  is coded accousitcally in STM and semantically in LTM.  e.g~hot, trot    e.g~warm,hot

RESEARCH ON CAPACITY:

  • carried out by Joseph Jacobs (1880)
  • measured 8 digit span
  • the number of digits you can remember in the corract order out loud
  • the mean digit span was 7.3
