Probability basics

all probabilities are between 0 and 1

  • the higher the probability of something, the more likely it is
  • a probability of 0 means it will never happen
  • a probability of 1 means it definitely will happen

you can find some probabilities using a formula

  • the following formula only works if all the possible results are equally likely
  • number of ways for something to happen / total number of possible results

probabilities add up to 1

  • if only one possible result can happen at a time, then the probabilities of all the results add up to 1
  • P(event happens) + P(event doesn't happen) = 1
