The narrator is rcaaling the day he and his lover parted and how he cant move on. Also hearing her name deeply affects the narrator and he believes that he'll always feel hurt by there separation

'pale' 'cold'- These adjectives suggest that her feeling for him have died and he treats the end of the realtionship like a death 

'silence'- The repitiion of the noun suggest there relationship was in secret and nobody knew about it

'share in its shame'- The alliteration of the 'sh' sound emphasises there realtionship was a secret
