Photosynthesis and the environment

Photosynthesis removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releases oxygen

Photosynthesis is the opposite of respiration: 

glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water

Green plants both photosynthesise and respire:

If photosynthesis exceeds respiration (in the light) plants will overall remove carbon dioxide and add oxygen

If photosynthesis is less than respiration (in the dark) plants will overall remove oxygen and add carbon dioxide
