PHASE 1

(Can last for several months and may have no symptoms)

• Immune system responds
  • Bacteria causes an inflammatory response from the host's immune system
  • Granuloma forms
  • Between 3-8 wks the infection is controlled and the infected region of the lung heals
• Bacteria evade the immune system
  • TB bacteria can survive and breed inside macrophages
