Loftus and Palmer carried out two experiments in their 1974 study. In the first experiment, 45 student participants were shown 7 film clips of traffic accidents and after each one they were asked to write an account of what they had seen. Afterwards they had to answer a series of questions. All questions were identical, except for one that asked about the speed of the vehicles involved in a collision. The key question was: 'Abut how fast were the cars going when they ____ each other?' There were five conditions, and the independent variable was manipulated by means of wording of the question.
