Observation (Psychology research methods)

?

Observation - this is a non-experimental technique which looks for behaviours.

There are two types:

Unstructured - this does not involved behavioural categories or any pre-determined plan and instead involves recording behaviours as the observation is occuring.

Structured - This is when behavioural categories are established. These are the behaviours being observed within the observation.

Two types of sampling - in this context, sampling refers to how the data is collected.

Event - this is when any behaviour seen is recorded. A strength of this is that it records all behaviour within the time of observation. However, a weakness of this is that important behaviours could be missed whilst writing down.

Time - this is when behaviour is recorded at time intervals such as, every 30 seconds.
