How significant was Edwards age in causing instability?

Edward VI - 

Henry's 3rd child. Born in 1537. 1547 - 1553

Issues raised by a minority reign:

  • Lack of experience (BUT he was educated in statecraft.)
  • Lack of maturity/knowledge/authority/respect
  • Vulnerable 
  • Foreign policy issues
  • Can't produce an heir for some time (Tudor name is threatened)

Problems of Edward's reign. 

  •  Inherited a poor kingdom.
  • Kingdom got poorer - Somerset's actions in Scotland.
  • Somerset SEIZED power in 1547 from the Regency Council (made up of 16 people)
  • The length of minority created issues.
  • The sickness of the child ---> insecurity.
  • French and Scottish friendship (potential enemies)
  • Religious reform ---> Protestantism was more fully implemented.
  • Rebellion - Prayer Book/Kett's (was seen as though E couldn't handle.
  • Somerset was seen as too liberal. 
  • The increase in the enclosure system.
  • Inflation led to DEBASEMENTSecond protector was Northumberland. 

To what extent was Somerset a threat to political instability?

His seizure of power - 

  • His protestant radicals wanted power.
  • Protestant gained control over the stamp + the Privy chamber. --> supported Seymour.
  • Aligned himself w/ the powerful young protestant. 
  • Friends with William Paget
  • He was ruthless in getting rid of rivals. 
  • Somerset took possession over E when Henry III died.
  • His 'lord protector title was powerful + recognised. 

Foreign policy/war. 

  • Scotland was seen as an easy target as Mary was in charge.
  • War was expensive.
  • July 1548 - Mary married a french man.

Religious change under Edward. 

1547 - Country is still Catholic in doctrine, but in not Roman Catholic ----- pope is father and leader of the international church.

1553 - Country is OFFICIALLY Protestant. 

The medieval church. 

  • Importance of MARY
  • Visuals are important - 'eyes teach you the message.' 
  • Saints lead to miracles.
  • Face toward the east.
  • Singing is important
  • Transubstantiation.
  • Sacraments
  • Sacred heart
  • Money counts 

Poverty -- the need to live an extremely good life. 

Changes made under Somerset. 

  • Dissolution of the Monasteries. 
  • Wanted to introduce Protestantism -- need to remove all Catholicism 
  • Services were changed to be spoken in English, Sunday preaching and an English bible in each church. 

BUT - not all Catholics practises disappeared. 

By the END of Somerset's power, most of the old catholic tradition had been attacked + MANY  destroyed but could help w/ growth. 

Changes made under Northumberland

- With Northumberland triumph in 1550 further protestant movement would occur - b.c of the conflict between Catholic and Reformed.

- During Northumberland's power, there were difficulties in imposing religion changes.

1547 -  

  • V similar to an 'English' Catholic church. 
  • MASS still in Latin.
  • Ornaments and transubstantiation -- (familiarity and heritage) 

BUT 

  • Protestants in England. 
  • - Lutherans - Calvinists
