As the Four Humours were believed in, doctors tried to balance them out equally. This may have involved:

- Blood letting using leeches

- Causing vomiting (purging)

Superstition heavily increased during this period. Monarchs belived that by touching patients suffering scrofula they could cure them. 

Patients prayed to St Roch to cure their tooth ache, or St Anthony to cure them of St Anthony's Fire (Ergotism).
