MEDICINE AND HEALTH

  • 1861- Louis Pasteur discovered germs cause disease-> Vaccinations developed
  • 1750- Surgeries=bad, people died because of blood loss, pain, infection
  • To fight diseases->

- Blood loss - Transfusions

- Pain - Anaesthetics developed/ Antiseptics (by J.Simpson)

- Infection - Robert Lister developed Carbolic Spray

  • Farmers used machines
  • Industry expanded and dominated coal, iron, steel and textiles
  • Steam power used in more industries

CULTURE

  • 1750- Most children= no school and could not read or write
  • 1900- School- compulsory for 5-12 year olds (boys and girls) and many people= could read and write

MAJOR CHANGE

  • More universites in 1900
  • 1900- book publishing introduced and expanded

TRANSPORT

  • Railways introduced and helped Britain became more united
  • Canal companies= out of business and railways transported more goods-> faster method
  • Roads improved-> MAJOR CHANGE, used more often
  • Bicycles and cars invented->MAJOR CHANGE
  • Long journeys became much shorter
