Here is a book-by-book summary of the poem "The Aeneid" by Virgil that tells the s

- Book 1: Aeneas encounters a storm and is cast ashore at Carthage.

- Book 2: The hero tells Dido of his escape from Troy.

- Book 3: The wanderings of Aeneas: Harpies, meeting with Helenus. Death of Anchises.

- Book 4: Dido's passion for Aeneas. At Jupiter's command, Aeneas departs. Dido kills herself.

- Book 5: Funeral games for Anchises. Aeneas sets sail again.

- Book 6: The journey to the underworld.

- Book 7: War between the Trojans and Latins.

- Book 8: The shield of Aeneas.

- Book 9: Turnus rallies his troops.

- Book 10: The death of Pallas.

- Book 11: The death of Camilla.

- Book 12: The final battle.

- Aeneas: The protagonist of The Aeneid and the ancestor of the Romans. He is a Trojan prince who escapes from the sack of Troy and leads his followers to Italy, where he becomes the founder of a new race. He is pious, brave, loyal, and compassionate.

- Dido: The queen of Carthage and Aeneas's lover. She is a strong and independent ruler who flees from her brother's tyranny and builds a prosperous city in Africa. She is passionate, generous, and devoted to Aeneas, but also impulsive, jealous, and self-destructive.

- Turnus: The king of the Rutulians and Aeneas's main rival in Italy. He is betrothed to Lavinia, the daughter of Latinus, until Aeneas arrives and claims her as his destined bride. He is proud, courageous, honorable, and patriotic, but also stubborn, arrogant, and reckless.

- Ascanius: Aeneas's son by his first wife Creusa. He is also called Iulus or Julus, and he is the forefather of the Julian clan that includes Julius Caesar and Augustus. He is a symbol of Aeneas's destiny and future glory. He is brave, obedient, respectful, and eager to prove himself.
