There are many cricisims on the law relating to assualt or non-fatal offences. Many people believe that the language that is used is far too complex and can be very difficult to understand sometimes. For example the term 'serious assault' refers to grievous bodily harm, rather than a fear of unlawful force as it legally means.

People will generally refer the word 'assualt' to physically attacking someone, but in law the word assault does not require any physical contact. The structure of offences can be criticised because there is no clear boundaries between the offences.
