Context:

During the Victorian era men were very much superior to women. Women were seen to have a sole purpose of entertaining their husbands guests, providing children and cleaning and cooking for her family. This was known as the domestic sphere, which was a sterotype many women were involved in. Furthermore, marriage during this period was not romanticised and it was very un-equal. Women had to promise to obey their husbands and were seen as a property to them. During marriage women lost everything they had owned prior to the marriage, including any property or money.
