Hargreaves et al 1975: deviance in classrooms
argues that labelling comes in three stages
- Specualtion: makes guesses about the pupil based on appearence, likeablility and relationships with peers
- Elaboration: the teacher looks for evidence for previous assumptions
- Stabalisation: the teacher feels like they know the pupil and is not suprised by their behaviour

pupils are streamed based on ability and placed into different sets
