Institutional care is when children stay in places such as orphanages or childrens homes. This could be due to family breakdowns or the inability for a caregiver to look after the child.

- Longitudinal study / comparing Romanian orphans who were early or late adopted by UK familes with UK born adoptees who were placed with families before 6 months.
- The Romanian orphans went into orphanage between 1 and 2 weeks old. Orphanage conditions were very poor.
- 58 babies were adopted before 6 months old (early adopted.
- 48 babies were adopted between 2-4 years (late adopted)
