Family circumstances

• Mr Hooper lives in a gloomy house called 'Warings' which can reflect his personality. Also suggests that his family was like being at war with each other.
• Death of his wife, Ellen Hooper, leads to him wanting to find an informal housekeeper to keep him and Edmund Hooper company.

Character
