Formation of wave-cut platforms

  • Sea attacks base of the cliff forming a wave-cut notch
  • The notch is enlarged by continous erosion
  • The rock above notch becomes unstable and collapses
  • Backwash carries rubble away
  • This process repeats as cliff retreats leaving a wave-cut platform behind
