• very reactive so have to be stored in oil to stop them reacting with oxygen in the air.
• reactivity increases as e move down the group
• low density (lithium, sodium and potassium will all float on water)
• very soft so can be cut with a knife
• silvery, shiny look when first cut however, quickly go dull…
