Functional foods are foods that have health promoting benefits above their basic nutritional value. 

Probiotic foods - have bacteria like Bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria Lactobacillus, which are both believed to maintain a healthy digestion system
Prebiotic foods - have added sugars called oligosaccharides, which aren't digested but they feed the 'good' bacteria in the alimentary canal
Plant stanol esters - clinically proven to reduct absorption of harmful chloesterol
