Family Diversity

Two main strands when examing family diversity: the modernist approach (againest family diversity, sees society as having a 'best-fit' family); and the postmodernist approach (in favour of family diversity, sees 'family' as a defintion that could mean anything)

The Modernist Approach

Functionalists and New Right as decribed as being 'modernist', they see society as fixed and predictable. The nuclear family is best as it helps perform certain essential functions.
