Explain the significance of Pare in the development of surgery (8)

Pare was very significant in the development of surgery during his own lifetime in the Renaissance Period. This was because he invented the first antiseptic cream in 1537. Instead of using burning hot oil, he used rose oil, egg white and turpentine, when he ran out of oil. His patients sleep well and their wounds healed quickly. In addition, Pare challenged accepted practice based on observation and examination - this helped in the development of surgery as he encouraged and came up with new ideas and practices. The cream was simpler (didn’t have to be hot) and much less painful, meaning that patients were treated more successfully. Pare also invented ligatures, which were also less painful, however they could introduce infection and took longer to use in battlefield surgery. Although this method is used today, it may not have been the best method to see during the Renaissance Period, as it was time consuming and could lead to further complications.
