POLAND;

  • Solidarity was suppressed in 1981
  • Martial Law introduced in 1983
  • the underground workers were supported by the Pope in his visits 1983 & 1987
  • after several protests by workers, martial law was lifted in 1988 as well as reforms being introduced
  • Solidarity was legalised in 1989

HUNGARY;

  • hard line leader Kadar from 1956 was sacked
  • government now dominated by reformers
  • opened borders in September 1989, on the 11th, 125,000
