Energy in food production

In the developed world, our diet consists of :

  • meat
  • animal products like: eggs, cheese and milk. 

Most of the energy from the plant eaten by the animals we eat has been lost by the time it reaches us. 

We even feed animals to animals. ground up fish is given to chickens and pigs, that means there is an extra layer in the food chain - plant to fish - fish to pig - pig to human.   What could have been used as biomass for us has been used as energy by other animals in the chain.
