Culture/culture and interests

Culture does not have a concrete definition. It has a complex history and a broad range of meanings

Mathew Arnold: Culture is about the best things in life eg music, art. Beauty, intelligence and perfection and is same for all socities.

Raymond Williams: Culture is ordinary and everything eg cooking, pub. Must recognise all forms of culture, not just one.

'Culture is everything we do that the monkeys don't.' - Lord Raglan.

Culture is relative. Some forms are culture are regarded as 'high culture,' and some are dismissed and looked down upon because they are seen as mass culture where everyone can enjoy it instead of high culture such as shakespeare which is seen an intelligent and 'elite.' 'My big fat gypsy wedding,' versus 'Stuart Lee.'

Pierre Bourdieu: Link between culture and power. Cultural knowledge is an asset, social advantage and distinction.

How much are we influences by the culture around us? We are socialised into our culture. indivudal actions - agency socital/cultural influence - structure
