Introduction: PERFORMER

Laura Wade's play Colder Than Here is a naturalistic dark comedy that explores her desire for people to 'make friends with death'. The play is from the persepcitve of a family of 4 who's matriarch has recently been diagnosed with secondary bone cancer and explores how the family must now try and cope individually and collectively. This extract is interesting to me as it is from the [BEGINNING/MIDDLE/END] of the play and is [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. As a performer playing [CHARACTER], I would uses [TECHNIQUES FROM THE QUESTION] to convey main aim for this extract; to show [1b, 2b, 3b, 4b, 5b, 6b, 7b, 8b, 9b] to the audience.

1. the first time the audience see Jenna and Myra alone together as well as being when the audience is introduced to Myra - the matriarch.

1b. MYRA - the intimate nature of the relationships Myra has with her family as well as her acceptane of her death. JENNA - the immaturity of Jenna and the difficulty she has with understanding anyone elses problems but her own.

2. the first time the audience see all the family interact together - and the dependency they have on Myra.

2b. MYRA - trying to reconnect the family back together as well as the slow deterioration of her and the control she feels she must have. ALEC - his difficulty with intimacy and understanding his own and others emotional responses. HARRIET - the maturity of her and the need she feels to support everyone else (Myra and Alec) JENNA - the immiturity of her character, yet the warmth and understanding she gets from Myra.

3. the first time the audience see Jenna and Harriet alone together - and the conflict in their sibling relationship.

3b. JENNA - the need she feels to make everything about herself and the dependecy she feels on her mum. HARRIET - the need she feels to accept no support in fear of detracting attention from her mum.

4. the first scene without Jenna, just Myra, Alec and Harriet - and the relationship dynamics between them when not overshadowed by Jenna.

4b. MYRA - slowly showing her frustration with her illness ALEC -  his dislike of change and the difficulty with intimate connections and accpetance that he has. HARRIET - the need she feels to try and physically get her parents to accept the new change.

5. only scene
