Overview:

  • along with Thatcher he founded the Centre of Policy Studies of 1975- was to become the driving force behind the dramatic change that took place in British, US and European conservatism in the 1980s-90s
  • although neo-liberal conservatism became known as Thatcherism, it was Joseph who was the ideological inspiration behind it

His ideas:

  • he asserted that deprivation in society was inherited from one generation to the next
  • he called this the 'cycle of deprivation', claiming that it wasn't caused by a lack of action by the state, but too mcuh
  • the state was creating
