Cloning Plants:

Cuttings

• Garderner takes a plant cutting
• Cuttings are kept in moist conditions until they are ready for planting
• Plant the cuttings to produces genetically identical copies of the parent plant
• Used to produce plant quickly and cheaply

Tissue Culture

• Tissue samples are taken from parent plant
• Samples placed into an agar growth medium with nutrients and auxins (hormones)
• Tissues develop into plantlings
• Plantlings are place into compost to grow

• Different combinations of plant hormones are used to make the cells first divide rapidly and then to differentiate the cells into stem, root and leaf cells.
