What are Clones?
Clones are organisms that have identical genes.
1 of 10
What is cloning an example of?
Cloning is an example of asexual reproduction.

How do you start to clone a mammal?
To clone a mammal (such as a sheep or cat), you start with a body cell from a adult mammal and an egg cell from the same species. The clone will have exactly the same gene as the animal from which the body cell was taken.

What is step 1 of Cloning a mammal?
The diploid nucleus is removed from an adult body cell, and the nucleus is removed from the egg cell.
4 of 10
What is step 2 of Cloning?
The diploid nucleus from the body cell is placed inside the empty egg cell. The cell is then stimulated with an electric pulse to start mitotic division. The cell divides and grows as an embryo.
5 of 10
What is step 3 of Cloning?
The embryo is placed in the uterus of a surrogate mother until it is ready to be born. The surrogate mother is a different animal from the donors of the body cell and egg cell.

What is an advantage of Cloning?
If the animal that is cloned had good features, all of its offspring will have the same good features.
7 of 10
What is a disadvantage of Cloning? (1)
It is more difficult to clone a mammal than a plant. It may take many attempts before a healthy cloned mammal is born, and each attempt costs more money.
8 of 10
What is a disadvantage of Cloning? (2)
Cloned mammals may suffer more health problems than usual, which may cause them to die early.
9 of 10
What is a disadvantage of Cloning? (3)
Any genetic defect in the parent will be passed on to the offspring.
