The choice and use of operating systems
User Interface
The interface Is the way that we interact with computer hardware. Whatever method is used for the user to communicate with a computer or computerised device, it is the operating system that provides these features.
Graphical User Interface
This is the way in which most PCs work. Using icons that you can click on and drag and drop folders where they need to be.
GUI stands for Graphical User Interface; it can also sometimes be called WIMP. (Windows, icon, menus and Pointers) this type of interface puts more pressure on the processor. Mobiles and tablets have the same sort of interface but use peoples fingers to swipe and move things around.
Command line interface
Some complex computers have a CLI, non mouse, or menus just text. Before windows came along only this type of interface was used. Advanced computers still use this as it saves the processing power as there are no images, menus or windows that need to run.
Menu based interface
These are common in application programmes but are also used in some operating systems on specialised devices. They are generally easy to use as the user does not have to memorise commands. They can be explored to discover the available options. However, they are less flexible than a command line interface.
Adaptive Interface
Most web pages and apps are now constructed so that they adapt to the size of screen being used. They respond to individual user as well as to screen size. Software developers are working on interfaces that adapt to the current user. They collect data cover tome and anticipate each users actions and preferences.
