Rates of Reaction- Rate=change in concentration                                                                                       n                                                    time

The lower the concentration the slower the rate of reaction. Increasing the concentration of a reactant increases the number of particles in a given volume. This increases the number of collisions and therefore rate of reaction increases.

Reactions happen at varying rates eg. rusting is a very slow reaction and explosions are caused by very quick reactions.

Studying rates of reaction is important in areas such as:

  • food preservation- how quickly food deteriorates
  • pharmaceuticals- how quickly medicines
