Ions and Ionic Compounds
- Group 1 form +1 ions and Group 7 form -1 ions
- An ionic bond is formed when metals and non-metals react, The non-metal atoms gain electrons and become negatively charged ions and metals lose electrons to become positively charged ions
- A single crystal of sodium chloride (table salt) is one giant ionic lattic. the Na+ and Cl- ions are held together in a regular lattice
- The properties of ionic compounds are: hig melting and boiling points, when they are solid, the don't conduct electricity and they dissolve easily in water
Covalent Substances
- Covalent bonds are formed when non-metal atoms bond together and share pairs of electrons
- Simple molecular compounds typically have low melting and boiling points because to melt or boil them, you only need to break feeble intermolecular forces…
