NATURE OF EVENT
- Formed over Bay of Bengal during last week of april 2008
- 28th april it strengthened to cyclone
- As it approached Burma it strengthened to category 4
- Hit Burma on 2nd may
- Winds speed 215kmh + storm surge 5m
- As it moved inland it down graded to a storm on 3rd may
WHERE WAS IMPACTED
- The irrawaddy delta in Burma was hit hardest because the cyclone hit it head on
- Large proportion only just above sea level and over 14000km of land was flooded
- Sri Lanka was affected by heavy rainfall which led to flooding and landslides
SOCIAL IMAPTCS
- More than 140,000 killed
- 450,000 houses destroyed
- 2.5 million homeless
- 43% of fresh water ponds used as water source damaged by salt water
