NATURE OF EVENT

  • Formed over Bay of Bengal during last week of april 2008
  • 28th april it strengthened to cyclone
  • As it approached Burma it strengthened to category 4
  • Hit Burma on 2nd may
  • Winds speed 215kmh + storm surge 5m
  • As it moved inland it down graded to a storm on 3rd may

WHERE WAS IMPACTED

  • The irrawaddy delta in Burma was hit hardest because the cyclone hit it head on
  • Large proportion only just above sea level and over 14000km of land was flooded
  • Sri Lanka was affected by heavy rainfall which led to flooding and landslides

SOCIAL IMAPTCS

  • More than 140,000 killed
  • 450,000 houses destroyed 
  • 2.5 million homeless
  • 43% of fresh water ponds used as water source damaged by salt water
