Carbon dioxide is a colourless and odourless gas that is denser than air and slightly soluble in water. Carbon dioxide is prepared in the labatory by the reaction of calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid.
Equations:
Calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid ---> calcium chloride + carbon dioxide + water
CaCO (s) + 2HCl (aq) ---> CaCl (aq) + CO (g) + H O (l)
Test for CO
Limewater will turn cloudy when carbon dioxide is bubbled through it.
Ca(OH) (aq) + CO (g) ---> CaCO (s) + H O (l)
If excess carbon dioxide is bubbled…
