Bultman and Language as Myth

- Myths are fictional stories, but for religious people a myth communicate a particular world view- values, beliefs and responses to ultimate questions.

- Myth’s communicate truths- The values of a society e.g. Greek Myths portray values of people being pious, loyal and brave.

- Different cultures share similar myths. Vardy observes e.g. creation myths, virgin births and great floods. These communicate the same ideas and values.

- Creation myths have similar themes e.g. God created the world ‘Ex-nihilo’ and the creation of human beings, these establish a connection between the normal human world and the godly supernatural world.

- Man is placed below God, but above animals and plants.
