Britain's role in the UN

Along with China, the USSR, and the USA, British diplomats were involved in drawing up the UN Charter. The key principal of the Charter were strongly influenced by the democratic values of the Western powers, and provided for:

  • Maintenance of international peace and security
  • Prevention of aggression
  • Peaceful settlement of international disputes
  • Addressing economic, social and cultural problems
  • Promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction as to ethnicity, gender, language or religion.
