CAT Scans

  • Uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed structural images of the inside of the body
  • Cross section of the person's brain
  • +Useful for revealing abnormal structures in the brain such as tumours or structural damage
  • +The quality of the images is much higher than that of traditional x-rays
  • -Require more radiation )cannot be used often)
  • -Only provide structural information (limited use in research linking brain areas to particular behaviours)

PET Scans

  • Measures metabolic activity in the brain
  • Injected with a small amount of a radioactive substance (most active areas shown as red/yellow and least active
