describe questionnaires
open and closed questions generating both quantitative and qualitative data, used to focus on potential causes of drug misuse e.g. education
1 of 12
describe interviews
structured and unstructured, used to find out lots of information that is typically very personal about drug use, generates qualitative data
2 of 12
details three strengths of surveys
depth and breadth of information gathered, can find out some things that you can't with observations e.g. emotional experiences, when standardised surveys are reliable and can be repeated
3 of 12
detail three weaknesses of surveys
changing housing situation of addicts so hard to follow-up on, notoriously low response rate, may give socially desirable interview answers especially because drugs are illegal
4 of 12
define a structural scan and give an example
MRI scans//look at the structure of the brain
5 of 12
define a functional scan and given an example
PET scans//look at brain activity and the way the brain functions
6 of 12
outline how PET scans work
a radioactive tracer is injected into the blood and it is detected as it decays. it decays as positrons which collide with electrons to produce gamma rays which are picked up by the tracer and can see levels of activity from them
7 of 12
how can PET scans be used for research into substance misuse
can compare brain functioning of a non-addict with the brain functioning of an addict and see how the drugs affect this
8 of 12
outline how MRI scans work
powerful magnetic field causes protons to align and radio waves are passed through the scanner. as the protons return to their normal positions they emit these radio waves which are then picked up by the machine and an image of the brain is formed
9 of 12
how can PET scans be used for research into substance misuse
can see if drug addicts have different brain parts to non-addicts: to see if drug dependency is genetic
10 of 12
detail three strengths of scanning
objective image of the brain, reliable as standardised procedure and the machines do not make errors, only way to see how drugs effect your brain make-up and functioning
11 of 12
detail three weaknesses of scanning
subjective potentially with the interpretation of the scans although the scientists are trained, expensive, doesn't show the other effects of drugs such as the emotional impact on the individual
