Biology B3.1 - Genetically Modifying Organisms

Genetic engineering is the same as genetic transformation. This makes a transgenic organism. If something has been genetically modified then it has had genes either added or taken away from it.

Advantages of Genetic Modification:

Easy and safe weed/pest control.

Cuts the use of toxic pesticides.

There is less damage to the environment/wildlife.

Disadvantages/Ethical concerns:

Not natural.

May harm humans.

May harm wildlife.

May transfer undesirable characteristics to undesirable organisms for example weeds that are resistant to herbicide.
