TYPICAL ANTIPSYCHOTICS.
DOPAMINE ANTAGONISTS:
-since 1950's
-act as antagonists in the dopamine system and aim to reduce dopamine.
-block dopamine receptors in the synapses in the brain.
-dopamine levels build up after taking CHLORPROMAZINE, then production is reduced.
-This normalises neurotransmission in the brain reduces hallucinations.
-Chlorpromazine also has a sedation (relaxing) effect as it has an effect on histamine receptors.
ATYPICAL ANTIPSYCHOTICS.
CLOZAPINE:
-Binds to dopamine receptors and acts on glutamate and serotinin receptors.
-reduces depression and anxiety, improves cognitive functioning and mood.
