Procedure 

123 American male students, tested individually with a group of confederates (6-8)

Participants had to identify the length of a standard line 

18 trials, 12 'critical trials' where confederates gave the wrong ans 

Findings 

Naive participants gave the wrong ans 36.8% of the time  = shows high level of conformity 

Asch effect: the extent to which people conform even in an unambiguous situation 

25% of participant never gave a wrong ans 

75% conformed at least once 

Conclusion 

Participants said conformed to avoid rejection = NSI and privately disagreed = compliance 

Variables affecting conformity 

Group size: confederates varied between 1-15
