Photoelectric Effect
The photoelectric effect shows how light behaves as a particle, as if light is shone on a metal surface, the metal will lose charge by the emission of photoelectrons. This occurs because when an electron absorbs a photon with a high enough energy the electron will be emmited from the surface of the atom as a photoelectron.
This minimum energy required to emmit an electron from the surface of a metal is called the work function.
The minimum frequency photon that will emmit an electron from an atom is called the threshold frequency.
Work function = Plack's Constant x Threshold frequency
