Arguments For God

Design Argument-

Design Qua Purpose:

Specific parts fit together to achieve a specific function/purpose (e.g. a watch).

Manufactured machines, such as watches, are the result of intelligent design.

The agent responsible is God, as the world needs a worldmaker, as the watch needs a watchmaker.

Design Qua Regularity:

The regularity of the universe demands an intelligent mind as an explanation.

E.g. planets obey laws of motion.

The universe acts in a regular/predictable way.

The agent responsible is God.

Anthropic Principle:

Tennant.

The universe is so perfect for human living conditions, it must have been made that way.

Strong Principle: The universe was made, as it is, for human arrival/existence.

Weak Principle: If the universe were any different, humans would not be able to exist/survive.

Swinburne's 'Goldilocks Analogy' & 'Fine-Tuning'.

Swinburne: "This surely cannot be chance...it is more probable than not that there is an intelligent designer."

The Sun is the perfect distance away, gravity is perfect for our planet, etc.

Aquinas' 5th Way:

The natural world follows natural laws, even if things are not conscious.
