- Assumes mental disorder caused by biochemical imbalance, attempts to correct imbalance by adminstration of drugs. Aim to alter abnormal behaviour by intervening directly in bodily processes - more specifically synaptic trasmission between neurones found in the brain.
- Monoamine-oxidase inhibitors, block the action of the enzyme that breaks down noradrenaline and serotonin at the post-synaptic knob, so increasing the availability of these neurotransmitters in the nervous system- elvating the mood of the depressed indiviudal.
- Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, example Prozac. These inhibit the re-uptake of serotonin and thus making more of this…
