  • Assumes mental disorder caused by biochemical imbalance, attempts to correct imbalance by adminstration of drugs. Aim to alter abnormal behaviour by intervening directly in bodily processes - more specifically synaptic trasmission between neurones found in the brain. 
  • Monoamine-oxidase inhibitors, block the action of the enzyme that breaks down noradrenaline and serotonin at the post-synaptic knob, so increasing the availability of these neurotransmitters in the nervous system- elvating the mood of the depressed indiviudal.
