Definition of moral panic:

A moral panic is a wide spread feeling of fear, often irrational, that some evil person or thing threatens the values, interests, or well being of a community or society.

Folk devils and Moral panic

Stanley Cohen was the first person to define the term, he explained how the medias response to disturbances between two groups of youths- the Mods and Rockers- created a moral panic.

This was characterised by three elements:
