- The properties of a particle depend on the quarks that make it up.

- Baryons are made up of three quarks.

- Mesons are made up of one quark and one antiquarks.

- Kaons have a strangeness in them

- A quark cannot remain by itself (quark confinement), and so if a proton is blasted with energy, the energy just changes into matter (pair production).
