World Wide Web (WWW)

  • It is a collection of information that has grown up on computers
  • Connected to the internet
  • Available for anyone to access
  • Info made up of webpages
  • described as a multimedia service

Features

  • Written using HTML
  • Viewed using a web browser
  • Contains Hypertext (w/ clickable links to other pages on web)
  • contains sound,video,animation,graphics and hypertext
  • Hypertext transfer protocol to send pages across the internet.

  • Reference to the address opf a resource on the internet

HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)

  • application protocol used on WWW
  • defines how data is structured, transmitted
  • specifies how broswers and web servers should actin repsonse to requests.

IP Address (Internet Protocol Address)

  • represents standard set of rules
  • ensure proper transfer of info between computers on the internet.
  • define how data is structured and what control signals are used.
  • Everydevice linked to newtowkr uses IP protocol identified by a unique IP address.
  • allows messages and data to be routed to correct address on the network.
  • consists of four numbers seperated

  • allows users to view and use the web pages on the internet
  • Responsible for requesting grpahics and text of webpages from servers on the internet

Search engine

  • web-based tool that searches for info using keywords/criteria
  • it returns results as website links based on criteria provided
  • some use a spider/webcralwer
  • 'crawls' web server and constructs index of pages
  • users searches topic using net- index made as webcraler is used
  • ensures index is up to date
  • diff SE search diff servers
  • meta tags-specify key words in heading of html page
  • these words help SE to catergorise pages
  • decide whether/not to indluce them in the results for search

  • allow browsers to download website images,datad and documents=faster viewing in future.
